Those are just a few words to describe the Simon Youth Academy at Old Cockrill, which serves students ages 17 through 21 as they earn their high school diploma.
Everyone here has a common goal and vision to achieve academic success and graduate. Our students recognize the Academy as a second chance to finish strongly, and all faculty and staff are devoted to supporting them every step of the way. We provide individualized learning for all our students.
Flexible & Small Classes
The Academy at Old Cockrill, located in the Nations neighborhood in West Nashville, has two classes each day with additional time for tutoring or credit recovery. Many classes allow students to work at their own pace. All classes are small in number allowing students to receive individualized assistance.
Post-Secondary Focus
The Academy offers individualized help with post-secondary planning and aims to equip each student with the necessary resources and skills to successfully transition to their desired path after high school, whether that be attending college, pursuing vocational training, joining the military, or directly entering the workforce.
The transition coordinator helps ensure accommodations are provided and students have everything they need for their next step in life.
Rigor and Recognition
Students at The Academy are dedicated to earning their high school diplomas. They attend school regularly and focus on completing the work needed to achieve their goals.
The teachers and staff at the Academy strive to ensure every student is accepted for who they are, recognized as an individual, and feels a sense of belonging and community in our school.
Jobs, Workshops and Scholarships
- We offer targeted workshops that focus on life skills and career readiness such as guest speakers, to employment readiness skills training and more.
- Each enrolled student is eligible for a Simon Youth Scholarship of up to $20,000.
- We also offer paid worked-based learning and job shadowing opportunities.

You can apply to enroll at the Academy if you:
- are between the ages 17 to 21.
- need 8 or fewer credits to graduate.
- did not graduate or are at risk of not graduating on time.
- are serious about obtaining a high school diploma.
- would thrive in a smaller school with smaller class sizes.
- would like, or need, personalized support for planning life after high school.
